Location

We went to Tidemills to take a few photos of our locations so we can plan out exactly how each shot will work.

Presentation

This is our presentation on what we plan to do in our video, and different aspects of the video. here is the link: https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0BxlFgGCjHcpwNWM5NDk5MTMtNTFkOS00NDRkLTg5YzctZDJkNmE3ODIxOGM3&hl=en

Mise-en-scene

Props:
-Bottles
- Cigarettes
- Glow in the dark paint
- Fire
- Flower/Plants

Location:
-Ruins
-Town center
- Beach
-Rustic Building

Costume/Make up:
- Normal clothes light colours(to be seen in the dark), (no brands or Music related)
-Use foundation for air brushing effect , all other make will be subtle and natural (eyeliner, mascara)
Colour:
-We plan to use different shades of blue filter and more pastely colours such as light green and purple. We will also use glow in the dark paint which we will enhance to stand out in editting. When the words that are within the lyrics come up we will enhance the object or text to stand out. In other parts of the video such as at the beginning we will have a time lapse shot of the sun setting, here we will enhance the reds and oranges to emphasise the colours of the sun setting.

Flat plans

These are my flat plans for my digipak. I used similar ideas on each using imagery from our video to connect the promo pak together. I used the trippy imagery that is used on the other MGMT digipak i looked at and decided not to use Yes's style of artwork as it didnt match our song and band. These 3 flatplans are all are aimed at the same audience as our video because we need to be consistent with our advertising to do this i used imagery that would appeal to the teen audience such as the tanks, grenades, musical instruments and alcohol.
In the first flatplan (top left) i used imagery from the video heavily using it for the front cover and back cover to empahsise the connection.
The second flatplan (top right) i used the trippy aspects of the video alot more, such as the shot of people stumbling through a line of light thats rushing towards the foreground. For the front cover of this digipak i decided to have the main focus the title of the song and have weird objects floating around it, all of these objects relate to the lyrics and/or video.
In the final flatplan i used alot more inspiration from the song using war like imagery. I then also used the shot of people stumbling through light and the starting shot on the back to keep the connection between the two products. I think this is the digipak i will finally make in Indesign because it relates to the song better than the other two and it also keeps the trippy nature of MGMT.

Digipaks

Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging (www.wikipedia.com). For this part of the project we will be making a digipak for our song, the digipak will be aimed at the same audience as our video and poster which is 15-21 year olds.

The digipak on the right is for another MGMT single 'Time to Pretend'. This digipak continues to reinforce MGMT's trippy style, aiming at 15-21 year olds like our video. If you look closely at the image you can see game console controllers, showing that they are aiming for a youngish audience as gaming is widely associated with teenagers, another way they do this is by making the imagery very violent, bizarre and brightly coloured, therefore catching the eye of their target audience. It also has conflicting images such as the earth being eaten by two monsters, which appear to be being controled by the gaming controllers in the hands of trippy lookings creatures and a love heart down the bottom. There is so much going on in the picture that some things become really subtle until you look closer such as the city scape at the bottom, the guitar hovering above the world and the small font spelling out 'eat the world'. I'm going to incorparate this bizarreness into my digipak for 'Weekend Wars'. This digpak fits the genre well as it is abstract at the same time as being very eye catching and including imagery that 15-21 year olds will identify with.

The digipak on the right is from a progeressive band called Yes who used the same sort of weird art work on there album digipaks. This digipak's audience at the time would have been a slightly older audience than MGMT's such as 21-40. This means the imagery has less violence and less going on. The album is called fragile and shows the earth hanging in space with water and trees highly visible, unlike MGMT's digipak this one seems to have a message, 'that the earth is a fragile place that needs looking after. The image of the the flying boat meets crossbow leans more towards the trippy style that MGMT uses. There isnt alot going on in this digipak when compared with 'Time to Pretend' but this could be due to the fact that this digipak has a message. Like 'Time to Pretend' this uses bright colours to catch there audiences attention when on the a shelf in a shop. I think for my digipak i will take the trippyness of MGMT's digipak and the idea of having a message from 'Fragile'. This digpak fits in well with its genre as most progressive artwork is pretty abstract with imagery that makes you think.

Planning a music video

Our music video

We chose MGMT-weekend wars because we wanted to do an abstract video and we felt this song fitted our requirements.

Lyrics

Evil S I yes to find a shore,
A beach that doesn't quiver anymore,
Where we can crush some plants to paint my walls,
And I won't try to fight in the weekend wars
Was I? I was to lazy to bathe
Or paint or write or try to make a change.
Now I can shoot a gun to kill my lunch
And I don't have to love or think too much

Instant battle plans written on the sidewalk
Mental mystics in a twisted metal car
Tried to amplify the sound of light and love

Christ is cursed of faders and maders
Might even take a knife to split a hair
Or even scare the children off my lawn
Giving us time to make the makeshift bombs
Every mess invested was a score
We couldn't use computers anymore
It's difficult to win unless you're bored,
And you might have to plan for the weekend wars

Try to break my heart I'll drive to Arizona.
It might take 100 years to grow an arm
I'll sit and listen to the sound of sand and cold
Twisted diamond heart, I'm the weekend warrior
My predictions are the only things I have
I can amplify the sound and light and love

I'm a curse and i'm a sound,
When I open up my mouth,
There's a reason I don't win,
I don't know how to begin

We think the lyrics will be fairly simple to convert to film as they mention lots of everyday objects which we can use in the video. The lyrics themselves are pretty abstract so this should help us when it comes to making an abstract video.

My role

I will be sharing the filming and directing with one other person so we can alternate and get a good feel for both experiences.

Ideas so far

So far we have the location, which is going to be Tidemills which is part of Seaford beach, we also think we are going to film it all from first person perspective of a group of 4 people on drugs because this gives us a massive range of ideas we can use. For the chorus we think we are going to use animation where we take an object from the video and animate it and then at the end of the chorus do that in reverse, and then we are going to reuse the same animation for each chorus but alter it slightly each time so it seems different as this will give us more time for other things. At the beginning we think we will use a time lapse of the sun going down as MGMT use time lapses in more or less all there videos and the effect works well.

Video analysis

MGMT have a video for there song Electric Feel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtUI5MC9tVM) is set in a very bright forest with a group of people playing the song. Although this is different to our plan it has some similarity such as the use of one location devoid of other people. They also have very brightly colored liquid coming out of the moon, we might use an idea like this to draw attention to certain objects by painting them with rave paint. This video ends with the moon turning into 2 motorbikes and everybody dances, as you can tell this video is very abstract.

In Time To Pretend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVnRzEjpUmE) another video by them it shows them dancing around a campfire before going into some very weird animations done with a green screen, we could use this for some of the tripier parts of the song. This video doesnt make much sense apart from the lead singer shooting animals such as zebras and giant spiders with human mouths with a bow. Colour is used extensively in this video with many bright colours on screen at once which makes the video seem very trippy.
